A Rainy Walk in the Woods

This weekend Keenan and I went on another lovely walk through the woods.  We walked to a nearby lake called Lost Lake.  We have never actually walked out there before in the spring, usually we cross-country ski to it in the winter.  So it was lovely to see all the different plants and wild flowers coming out this time of year.

It was raining when we set out but it was still nice and a little more sheltered in the woods.  I was so excited to find some of the wild flowers pictured below for the first time.  It is pretty exciting for me to find new plants.  I should have lived during the time of Charles Darwin or Carl Linnaeus.

Can't say I look my coolest in this picture, but there it is, the real me out and about in the northern rain. Calypso Orchid, or Calypso bulbosa (top right)  and clump of Canadian Violets or Viola canadensis, which are white with a tinge of purple (bottom right). Canadian Violets can be confused with Marsh Violets as they are also white. But Marsh Violets have smaller leaves and do not grow as tall as Canadian Violets.

Keenan walking through the woods in Camouflage... can you even see him!? An amazing find for the first time, I didn't even know that we had wild Clematis in Canada. This is Blue Clematis or Clematis occidentalis (top right). Below is a type of wild vetch which a member of the Pea family.  I cannot quite tell as it is not in full bloom but it is either Creamy Peavine/ Lathyrus ochroleucus or Purple Peavine/Lathyrus nevadensis (bottom right).

  1. Glad you guys were able to enjoy another little hike even if it was rainy (although sometimes it's really refreshing to walk in the rain!). The Blue Clematis was such a good find.

Also have to say, Lost Lake is a beautiful name!

    1. Thanks Holly, yes it was not too cold out so the rain was fine by me. Im so excited to have found the Blue Clematis. Crazy to think that we have such a cold long winter and then in a span of a few weeks plants like this pop up.

  2. Oooh...This looks like so much fun! I've only hiked in the rain once, and it was when I was in the 6th grade and at science camp. =0) Beautiful calypso orchid!

  3. What a cool name for a lake! It really doesn't get better than a walk in the woods, unless you add rain. Nothing like the pitter patter of rain on the petals and leaves all around. It's looks like you had just a lovely time.
